VINCE NEIL: Tattoos & Tequila

Motivation to make a solo record besides your main band might differ from person to person, but mostly it shows a more personal approach of the artist. In other words: an opportunity to release song material which is not so suitable for the well-known main band. Mötley Crüe singer Vince Neil does it in a different way. He opted for a number of covers. Only two songs are really new. ‘Another Bad Day’ never made it on a Crüe album and the title track was written for him by Marti Frederiksen. By the way, we have to go back to the early nineties to spot Neil’s previous solo escapades.
It is light summer music in style of the cover (artwork): rock chicks for free, a nice drink, sun, tattoos and motorcycles. Vince Neil draws from the whole rock history. He gives songs of Cheap Trick, Elton John, ZZ Top, Creedence Clearwater Revival and the Hollies (to name a few) a personal touch. Guitar work is featured by multiple use of a talk box. Very eighties. For the rest you cannot ignore the typical voice of Neil. Party rock that fits to play loud in your car, without any fringes.

Motivatie om naast de hoofdband een soloalbum te maken kan verschillend zijn, maar meestal toont het een meer persoonlijke benadering van de artiest. Met andere woorden, songmateriaal dat niet zo geschikt is voor de gekende band. Mötley Crue zanger Vince Neil pakt het anders aan. Hij koos voor een aantal covers. Slechts twee nummers zijn nieuw. ‘Another Bad Day’ haalde nooit een Crüe album en de titelsong werd voor hem gepend door Marti Frederiksen. We moeten trouwens terug naar begin jaren negentig voor Neil’s vorige solo escapades.
Het is luchtige zomerse muziek geheel in stijl van de cover (hoes): rockchicks, een lekker drankje, de zon, tattoos, zware motoren, etc. Vince Neil put uit heel de rockgeschiedenis. Hij geeft songs van o.a. Cheap Trick, Elton John, ZZ Top, Creedence Clearwater Revival en de Hollies een eigen versie. Het gitaarwerk wordt gekenmerkt door veelvuldig gebruik van de talk box. Heel jaren tachtig. En verder kan je niet omheen de typische stem van Neil. Party rock om luid te draaien in je auto, zonder veel franje.
