LION’S SHARE: Emotional Coma

A very fine comeback, that’s how I would like to describe ‘Emotional Coma’ of Lion’s Share. The band harvested quite some success between 1995 and 2001 with four albums in the melodic metal genre. Especially ‘Two’, followed by European touring with renowned bands as Saxon, Iced Earth and Nevermore was considered as masterpiece. After ‘Entrance’ in 2001 it became silent around the band and they split up. Now bandleader/guitarist Lars Chriss is back with a new outfit. ‘Emotional Coma’ is heavier than early material, no more keyboards or harmony vocals, no more progressive elements. And we haven’t mentioned the new vocalist yet… be prepared for a positive surprise!
When an album includes the mighty voice of Nils Patrik Johansson – the one we know of Astral Doors and Wuthering Heights – we can be sure of some excellent vocals and the music will evolve into a proper direction, just by the marvellous voice of this man. And indeed, with his Dio/Toni Martin-alike voice mister Johansson determinates the sound. I won’t say that guitar skills of Lars can be underrated, for he does a great job as well, and on top of this he wrote all the songs and produced the record in cooperation with new bass player Sampo Axelsson (Glen Hughes). Lars found no less a person than Richard Evensand to record the drums, an accomplished and busy percussionist who is also involved in Chimaira and Therion.
‘Cult Of Denial’ kicks off with beautiful plucking guitars passing into some heavy riffs and raucous vocals. Lots of flashing guitar runs, also in the up-tempo ‘The Arsonist’ and the mid-paced ‘Emotional Coma’ in which Glen Drover of Megadeth adds a zest with fine leads. ‘The Edge Of The Razor’ is a compelling stunner where vocals of Patrik showcase the pathetic tinge of bombastic grandeur and that’s when he is at his best. Bruce Kulick (Kiss) as guest on guitar is a great add as well of course. But this album does not need such extras – Mats Levén is contributing as well – for the compositions are strong enough to engross all of you. In ‘Trafficking’ and ‘Hatred’s My Fuel’ we have some commercial harmony choirs, I am not fond of them. Just give me the heavier approach that Lion’s Share wants to follow right now – any Judas Priest and Metallica influences are not strange to them – like the heavy ponderous Black Sabbath sound in ‘Bloodstained Soul’. One can hear the band in another style during the Angel Witch cover ‘Sorcerers’ and they have made a fine version of it. This is a very strong comeback of Lion’s Share, one that includes an extra track (‘Ring Of Stupidity’ – probably a wedding ring) and the videoclip of ‘The Edge Of The Razor’ on the limited digipack edition.

Een erg geslaagde comeback, zo zou ik ‘Emotional Coma’ van Lion’s Share willen noemen. De band oogstte heel wat succes tussen 1995 en 2001 met vier albums in het melodieuze metal genre. Vooral ‘Two’, dat gevolgd werd door Europese tournees met klinkende namen als Saxon, Iced Earth en Nevermore, werd bejubeld als een meesterwerk. Na ‘Entrance’ in 2001 werd het stil en ging de band uit elkaar. Nu is bandleider/gitarist Lars Chriss terug met een nieuwe band om zich heen. ‘Emotional Coma’ is harder dan vroeger materiaal, weg zijn de toetsen en de koortjes, alsook de progressieve invloeden. En dan hebben we het nog niet over de nieuwe zanger gehad… wees klaar voor een aangename verrassing!
Wanneer een album ingezongen wordt door Nils Patrik Johansson – die we ook kennen van Astral Doors en Wuthering Heights – weten we al meteen dat de zang supergaaf zal zijn én dat de muziek een bepaalde kant zal uitgaan, gewoon door de grandioze stem van die man. En ja hoor, met zijn Dio/Toni Martin-achtig stemgeluid trekt meneer Johansson weer de kar. Niet dat we het gitaarwerk van Lars mogen onderschatten, want dat is ook genieten geblazen, en bovendien schreef hij de nummers en produceerde de plaat samen met nieuwe bassist Sampo Axelsson (Glen Hughes). Lars vond niemand minder dan Richard Evensand bereid om de drums in te spelen, een talentvol en drukbezet slagwerker die ook de trommels geselt bij Chimaira en Therion.
‘Cult Of Denial’ vangt aan met mooie tokkelende gitaren die overgaan in stevige riffs en rauwe zang. Veel flitsend gitaarwerk, ook in het uptempo ‘The Arsonist’ en het midtempo ‘Emotional Coma’ waar Glen Drover van Megadeth een knappe solo toevoegt. ‘The Edge Of The Razor’ is een meer slepende knaller waar de zang van Patrik de pathetiek van het grote gebaar heeft en dan is ie op zijn beste. Bruce Kulick (Kiss) als gast op gitaar is hier ook niet mis natuurlijk. Maar dit album heeft deze extra’s niet echt nodig – Mats Levén is ook van de partij - want de composities op zich zijn sterk genoeg om te blijven boeien. In ‘Trafficking’ en ‘Hatred’s My Fuel’ zijn er toch nog van die commerciële koortjes, ik ben er niet gek op. Geef mij maar die hardere lijn die Lion’s Share nu volgt – enige Judas Priest en Metallica invloeden zijn hen niet vreemd – zoals het zware Black Sabbath geluid in ‘Bloodstained Soil’. Je hoort de band eens in een andere stijl in de Angel Witch cover ‘Sorcerers’, maar daar hebben ze ook iets fraais van gemaakt. Een heel sterke comeback van Lion’s Share die op het gelimiteerde digipack nog een extra track bevat (‘Ring Of Stupidity’ – een trouwring waarschijnlijk, hehe) en de videoclip van ‘The Edge Of The Razor’.
