Burden Of Grief is a German based Thrash-Death Metal band formed in 1994. For more than 16 years now these hard working Germans are looking for a commercial breakthrough. So far, in vain.
For their fifth full length release the band played their highest cards and delivered its best work so far. ‘Follow The Flames’ is released by one of Germany’s biggest metal labels, Massacre Records, and the album was produced by Swedish top producer Dan Swanö. The result is ok, but the mix of old school thrash and melodic death metal riffs could not convince me for the full 100 percent. Technically these guys are ok, the overall sound of the album is more than average, but still I miss original, good quality songs that can keep my attention for more than 30 minutes. The label wants us to believe Burden Of Relief sounds like Opeth. Well, this is to say the least, not exactly fair. Opeth delivers original and moving songs, whereas Burden Of Grief is still looking for their own sound and musical direction.
Is this a bad cd? No, for sure the band has the potential to come up with a fine sixth album. We will keep a close eye on these talented German thrashers. ‘Follow The Flames’ is not a masterpiece but surely deserves your attention.
Ps: Our copy included a nice bonus cd. The band covers songs by Iron Maiden, Metallica, AC/DC, Blind Guardian and others.

Burden Of Grief is een Duitse Thrash-Death metal band die al vanaf 1994 op zoek is naar de grote erkenning. Jammer genoeg blijft die voor deze sympathiek en hardwerkende jongens vooralsnog achterwege.
“Follow The Flames” is hun vijfde worp en dit keer werden de grote middelen ingezet. Massacre Records werd in stelling gebracht en Zweeds topproducer Dan Swanö werd uitgenodigd plaats te nemen achter de productietafel. Het resultaat is ok, maar ook niet meer dan dat. De mix van oude thrash en melodische death metal riffs kon mij maar matig boeien. De heren kunnen aardig overweg met hun instrumenten en de stem van Mike Huhmann is best wel aardig, maar ik heb het gevoel alles al eens eerder gehoord te hebben, maar dan beter. De vergelijking met een band als Opeth, die we in de bio aantroffen, is dan ook schromelijk te hoog gegrepen.
Is dit een slecht album? Neen, beslist niet. Toch mist ‘Follow The Flames’ dat beetje originaliteit en een pak aardige songs om op te vallen boven het korenveld van releases. Dit album verdient best een luisterbeurt en kan wel even boeien, maar levert toch te weinig om een echte aanrader te zijn. Maar eerlijk is eerlijk, de band levert met dit album zeker hun beste cd af tot hiertoe. Misschien slaat de band met hun zesde worp wel gendadeloos toe. Wij wensen het alvast deze sympathieke Duitsers toe.
