SPIRITUAL BEGGARS: Return to Zero

Swedish classic heavy rock band Spiritual Beggars release their first studio album in five years.
Excellent classic heavy rock with a gripping clean guitar solo is all what a classic rock fan needs and that’s exactly what Spiritual Beggars is delivering. Sometimes bluesy, very melodic tunes but with a darker sound than previous albums.
I wasn’t expecting anything less, because Michael Amott is also guitarist/founding member of Arch Enemy, Sharlee D’Angelo plays bass in the same band, Per Wiberg plays keyboards with Opeth and half Swedish, half Greek Apollo is also the vocalist of Firewind, in which Ludwig Witt is the drummer.
Their sound is built around heavy, very deep guitar riffs producing classic heavy metal with a touch of stoner rock. Classic rock from Deep Purple, although there’s less organ than in the previous releases, to even the guitar sound of Cathedral.
After five strong rock tracks, there’s a break with a soft, delicate ballad, followed by the best track of the album “Coming Home”, which could come straight from a Deep Purple or Whitesnake album. I call this the best track but the competition is high. I almost choose another one after each audition.
The album ends in a great way with a second ballad. If you can’t get enough of them, you should try to lay your hands on the Japanese version, which contains a bonus track,”Time to Live”, a Uriah Heep cover.
There’s nothing new on this album. It’s like you have heard every tune somewhere before but it’s great fun to listen to. You don’t get them any better in this style.

De Zweedse classic heavy rock groep Spiritual Beggars brengt zijn eerste album uit in vijf jaar.
Uitstekende classic heavy rock met pakkende gitaarsolo’s is alles wat een classic rockfan verlangt en dat is nu precies wat Spiritual Beggars aflevert. Soms bluesy, zeer melodieuze melodieën met een wat donkerder geluid dan hun vorige albums.
Ik had ook niets minder verwacht, want Michael Amott is ook gitarist en stichtend lid van Arch Enemy, Sharlee D’Angelo speelt bas bij dezelfde groep, Per Wiberg is toetsenist bij Opeth en de half Zweedse, half Griekse zanger Apollo zingt ook al bij Firewind, waar Ludwig Witt drummer van dienst is.
Hun geluid is opgebouwd rond hevige, zeer diepe gitaarrifs, wat samen een classic heavy metal stijl levert met ook nog wat stoner rock invloeden. Classic rock met duidelijke referenties naar Deep Purple, maar met minder orgel dan op hun vorige uitgaves en ik herken er zelfs het gitaargeluid in van Cathedral.
Na een vijftal stevige, sterke rocknummers, komt er een adempauze met een zachte, delicate ballad, gevolgd door het beste nummer van “Return to Zero”, namelijk “Coming Home”, dat rechtstreeks kon overgenomen zijn van een Deep Purple of Whitesnake album. Ik noem dit het beste nummer maar de concurrentie is groot en bij iedere beluistering durf ik wel eens mijn voorkeur veranderen.
Het album eindigt groots met een tweede ballad. Als je er niet genoeg kunt van krijgen kan je proberen de Japanse versie in handen te krijgen. Die bevat een bonus track,”Time to Live”, een cover van een Uriah Heep nummer.
Je vindt niks nieuws op dit album. Het is alsof je ieder deuntje al ergens gehoord hebt, maar het is enorm leuk om naar te luisteren. Je vindt ze niet beter in deze stijl.
