DOOMSHINE: The Piper At The Gates Of Doom

Doomshine has my sympathy from the very beginning: who creates a second album entitled ‘The Piper At The Gates Of Doom’, a direct link to the first album of Pink Floyd? But in this case they go for a doom approach as you may surmise…
This German quartet hailing from Ludwigsburg – their first gig took place at Rockfabrik – is based on friendship. They knew each other already for ten years before ever thinking about recording their own compositions in 2000. Even before that date of a serious debut album, they could open Doom Shall Rise festival in 2003 and even though they did not release so many things, they always eagerly played some gigs all over the country.
A first proper album ‘Thy Kingdoom Come’ (2004) came out on illustrious label Iron Glory Records. It was followed by silence until now. With ‘The Piper At The Gates Of Doom’ on Massacre they have a fair chance to be picked up by many traditional doom fans, because this is just what they are looking for. Just as the genre dictates, this traditional doom fest of 73 minutes kicks off with any bass guitar runs. Just to make sure that guitars are going to be low-tuned and remain that way. The influence of bands like Candlemass, Solitude Aeturnus and Black Sabbath cannot be denied, but in this case we are not dealing with a common copy.
Guitarist Sven Podgurski relishes these lengthy doom epics with fast and furious guitar skills – riffs as well as marvellous soloing. He’s a true master in it! Singer (and second guitarist) Timmy Holz has a clean, distinct voice (sometimes it is distorted to a rougher timbre). These slightly empyrean vocals and excellent guitar skills are properly illustrated in ‘River Of January’. It even gets better when true emotions are starting to prevail: listen to the hesitating guitar notes in ‘Doomshine Serenade’ and be our guest when this track slowly goes into crescendo, turning into a vigorous composition with solos that make you shed a tear. Solemn spoken passages in some of the songs add a kind of grandness you will love. Their sense for humour is illustrated by the title ‘Waltzhalla’ again, in despite of its undisputable bellicose timbre; this band has a different approach than others. In addition to the nine own compositions, they bring justice to their buddies Mirror Of Deception through the cover version of ‘Vanished’. This is really a great second album, recorded and produced by guitarist Carsten Fisch himself. It will not leave any traditional doom fan (into clean vocals) untouched. Beautiful!

Dit Duits viertal uit Ludwigsburg – hun eerste concert vond plaats in het Rockfabrik – is gebaseerd op vriendschap. Zij kenden elkaar al tien jaar voor ze in 2000 besloten om enkele composities nader onder de loep te nemen en uiteindelijk toe te vertrouwen aan een zilver schijfje. Voor het zover was mochten ze al spelen op Doom Shall Rise in 2003, en ondanks weinig releases zijn ze altijd wel actief gebleven in het clubcircuit om live te spelen.
Een eerste album ‘Thy Kingdoom Come’ (2004) kwam uit op het illustere Iron Glory Records, daarna bleef het stil tot nu. Met ‘The Piper At The Gates Of Doom’ op Massacre maakt men een goede beurt om een heel leger traditionele doom metal fans op hun wenken te bedienen. Dit is namelijk een kolfje naar hun hand. Zoals het genre dicteert, vangt deze brok traditionele doom aan met enige bas loopjes. Om maar aan te geven dat de gitaren laaggestemd blijven… De invloed van bands als Candlemass, Solitude Aeturnus en Black Sabbath is sterk aanwezig, maar in dit geval leidt dit niet tot schaamteloos kopiëren. Gitarist Sven Podgurski kruidt deze lange doom epossen namelijk met vinnig gitaarwerk. Meesterlijk! Zanger (en gitarist) Timmy Holz heeft een heldere stem die over ons heen galmt (ook al zet men soms de mixer op voor een ruwer timbre). De ietwat verheven zang en het uitmuntend gitaarwerk wordt mooi geïllustreerd in ‘River Of January’. Nog prachtiger wordt het echter wanneer de ware gevoelens aan de man komen: luister naar de aarzelende gitaarklanken van ‘Doomshine Serenade’ en wees getuige hoe dit open bloeit in een krachtige compositie waar een mooie gitaarsolo tranen in de ogen brengt… Plechtige gesproken partijen in sommige songs geven het geheel nog meer grandeur. Het gevoel voor humor komt alweer boven in de titel ‘Waltzhalla’. Ondanks zijn onafwendbaar strijdlustig timbre, pakt deze band het toch net iets anders aan. Naast de negen eigen songs brengen zij eer aan Mirror Of Deception (hun ontdekkers) mits de cover ‘Vanished’. Een erg knap tweede album, ingeblikt en geproduceerd door gitarist Carsten Fisch himself, dat geen enkele traditionele doom fan (met cleane vocalen) onberoerd zal laten. Mooi!
