THE FALL OF EVERY SEASON: From Below

Dark, dark, extremely dark! I warned you, but proper doom ought to be dark, while the music appears to be very melancholic and beautiful, a real comfort in times of suffering. ‘From Below’ is a conceptalbum about a family that knows nothing but trouble. This is the chronological story about the imprisoned son and his release. In black and doom metal it often happens that we have excellent albums, completely composed, played and recorded by one man. It is the case with The Fall Of Every Season as well for the Norwegian Marius Strand did it all by himself and yet the sound and production is perfect, I cannot hear one mistake or weak fragment and his raucous grunts as well as his emotional clean vocals are top notch. That is why ‘From Below’ is highly recommended to every fan of Opeth, Anathema, Draconian and Saturnus. The internet was a blessing instead of a curse for Marius: the fourteen minutes long ‘Her Withering Petals’ became such a success that Aftermath offered him a contract and they released this debut album. Most of the songs have a considerable length, but the dynamics between calm parts and ferocious outbursts are perfect.
‘From Below’ opens up with obscure sounds and acoustic, soaring guitars. Ponderous doom riffs join in and are relished with low, powerful grunts. Later on we get some clean vocals too, with a dreamy tinge and a bit along the lines of Anathema and even Radiohead. Acoustic guitars and common vocals are featured in ‘Sisyphean’. The thirteen minutes long ‘The Triumphant Beast’ has this alternating heavy doom patterns with softer fragments as well, when instrumentation and vocals have an introvert nature. Piano notes create a contemplative atmosphere in ‘Escape Of The Dove’, a song Marius dedicates to his girlfriend. The opus magnum of this impressive debut is the track that got famous on internet. ‘Her Withering Petals’ offers fifteen minutes long marvellous, fluttering guitar lines, full of echoes and reverbs, even the name Simon & Garfunkel crossed my mind when hearing those close harmony vocals, but these floating, slurring sounds have a proper counterpoise by vigorous outbursts of heavy doom riffs and ruthless grunts. This was labelled as progressive doom metal and I completely agree with that. A standout album to sit back and relax now that autumn is drawing near!

Je bent gewaarschuwd; maar doom metal hoort donker te zijn, waarbij de muziek erg weemoedig en mooi is en een balsem voor de ziel. ‘From Below’ is een conceptalbum over een familie die niets anders dan kommer en kwel kent. Dit is het chronologische verhaal over hun gevangen zoon en diens vrijlating. In black en doom metal gebeurt het wel meer dat we prachtige albums ontvangen van eenmansprojecten. Dit is ook het geval bij The Fall Of Every Season want de Noor Marius Strand deed alles in zijn uppie en toch is het geluid perfect, kan ik hem nergens op een fout betrappen en is zowel zijn rauwe grunt als zijn emotionele heldere stem prima. Dit maakt ‘From Below’ een dikke aanrader voor fans van Opeth, Anathema, Draconian en Saturnus. Voor Marius was het internet een hulp in plaats van een vloek: het veertien minuten lange ‘Her Withering Petals’ werd zo’n succes dat Aftermath hem een contract aanbood en dit debuut uitbracht. De nummers hebben een aanzienlijke lengte, maar de dynamiek tussen kalme stukken en hevige uitvallen is perfect.
‘From Below’ opent zijn deuren met duistere geluiden en akoestische, zweverige gitaren. Zware doom riffs vallen in en worden aangezet met lage, krachtige grunts. Later is er gewone zang die dromerig klinkt en soms wat weg heeft van Anathema en zelfs Radiohead. Akoestische gitaren en heldere zang staan centraal in ‘Sisyphean’. Het dertien minuten durende ‘The Triumphant Beast’ kent ook dit afwisselende zware doom patroon met zachtere stukken, waar instrumentatie en zang een introvert karakter hebben. Pianoklanken zorgen voor een beschouwende sfeer in ‘Escape Of The Dove’ dat Marius opdraagt aan zijn vriendin. Het opus magnum van dit imponerende debuut is het nummer dat op internet zo populair werd. ‘Her Withering Petals’ biedt vijftien minuten lang prachtige, uitwaaierende gitaarlijnen vol echo en galm, de naam Simon & Garfunkel schoot me zelfs te binnen bij de harmonieuze zang, maar de zweverige, lang aangehouden klanken hebben een afdoend tegenwicht door krachtige uitbarstingen van zware doom riffs en nietsontziende grunts. Niet voor niets werd dit beschreven als progressieve doom metal, daar kan ik het volmondig mee eens zijn. Een perfect album om even te gaan zitten en relaxen nu de herfst alweer nadert!
