OCTOBER TIDE: A Thin Shell

October Tide is back and this must be reported immediately to all music aficionados who have a soft spot for bands like Swallow The Sun, Ghost Brigade and Barren Earth in the current scene! However, October Tide happens to be Swedish and was founded in the mid nineties by Katatonia vocalist Jonas Renkse and (in the meantime ex-Katatonia) guitarist Fred Norrman. When Katatonia was put on hold for a while, two albums came out which I still consider as favourites of mine: ‘Rain Without End’ (1997) and ‘Grey Dawn’ (1999).
On the second album, Renkse was already gone and singer Martan Hansen was in charge behind the microphone, but on this comeback album after eleven years of silence, one can find even more new faces besides guitarist Fred Norrman. Last year he left Katatonia and most likely he finally had some time to breathe new life into October Tide. New vocalist is Tobias Netzell of In Mourning fame, producer Jonas Kjellgren also played the bass parts in the studio and Robin Bergh – we still remember him from Amaran – frees his demons behind the drums.
‘A Thin Shell’ is an amazing album for every doom/death metal fan who has a liking for melancholic, magnificent guitar leads, raucous vocals (only low-pitched grunts and when it goes crescendo you can hear a scream-like variant, thus no clean vocals), a pitch-black doom-like atmosphere and melody above extremity. Even though I am inclined to categorize October Tide as gothic doom of the nineties, do not expect an intricate, complex album that excels in snail slow heaviness. The seven minutes long ‘A Custodian Of Science’ reminds me a bit of Pyogenesis (‘Fade Away’), until Tobias Netzell starts his gravel-throated growls. Doom with momentum is regaled with howling, emotive guitar soloing, calm piano notes and thoughtful plucking guitars. But the foundation happens to be melodious metal that brims with melancholy. The roughness in ‘Deplorable Request’ is halfway interrupted by a sensitive part with refined acoustics, but what a scream resounds right before they eructate again! The instrumental ‘The Nightmare Project’ will even appeal to fans of progressive rock. The ‘singing’ guitar solos with slightly spatial touch are of unearthly beauty! On the other hand, dynamics are not missing. Just listen to ‘The Dividing Line’ or ‘Fragile’ with its fluttering guitars. This is top notch quality in melodic doom metal, you’ll realize that once again when the final track ‘Scorned’ captivates you with its riffs that seem to fall as domino stones and a marvellous guitar solo. What a comeback!

October Tide is terug en dat moet onmiddellijk gemeld worden aan liefhebbers die in de huidige scène bands als Swallow The Sun, Ghost Brigade en Barren Earth een warm hart toedragen. October Tide is echter wel Zweeds en werd halverwege de jaren negentig opgericht door Katatonia zanger Jonas Renkse en (inmiddels ex-Katatonia) gitarist Fred Norrman. Toen Katatonia even een bezinningsperiode hield, verschenen er twee albums die ik ook nu nog tot mijn favorieten reken: ‘Rain Without End’ (1997) en ‘Grey Dawn’ (1999).
Bij dat tweede album was Renkse al van het toneel verdwenen en nam zanger Martan Hansen de honneurs waar achter de microfoon, maar op dit comebackalbum na elf jaar stilte vinden we meer nieuwe gezichten naast gitarist Fred Norrman. Hij stapte vorig jaar uit Katatonia en vond wellicht terug tijd om October Tide nieuw leven in te blazen. Nieuwe zanger is de van In Mourning bekende vocalist Tobias Netzell, producer Jonas Kjellgren speelde ook de baspartijen in de studio en Robin Bergh – die we nog kennen van Amaran – mepte de boel bij elkaar.
‘A Thin Shell’ is een fantastisch album voor elke doom/death metal fan die houdt van weemoedige, prachtige gitaarsolo’s, ruwe vocalen (er is enkel lage grunts en wanneer men naar een climax toewerkt een meer schreeuwerige ruwe variant, geen cleane vocalen dus), een donkere doomachtige atmosfeer en melodie boven extremiteit. Want al heb ik de neiging om October Tide tot bij de gotische doom van de jaren negentig te rekenen, verwacht geen ontoegankelijk album dat tergend traag aan je voorbijtrekt. Het zeven minuten durende ‘A Custodian Of Science’ doet me even aan Pyogenesis (‘Fade Away’) denken, tot Tobias Netzell zijn grofkorrelige strot open trekt. Stuwende doom metal wordt opgesmukt met huilende gitaarsolo’s, kalme pianonoten en bedachtzame tokkelende gitaren. Maar de basis is melodieuze metal met veel weemoed. De ruwheid in ‘Deplorable Request’ wordt halverwege ook onderbroken door een gevoelig stukje verfijnde akoestiek, maar wat een intense schreeuw weerklinkt vlak voor de uitbarsting! Het instrumentale ‘The Nightmare Project’ zal zelfs bij fans van progressieve rock in de smaak vallen. De huilende gitaarsolo’s met lichtelijk ruimtelijk timbre zijn van een onaardse schoonheid! Dynamiek ontbreekt echter geenszins. Luister maar naar ‘The Dividing Line’ of ‘Fragile’ met zijn uitwaaierende gitaren. Een topper in het melodieuze doom metal genre is dit waar het afsluitende ‘Scorned’ je beklijft met zijn als dominostenen vallende riffs en prachtige gitaarsolo’s. Wat een comeback!
