POWERWORLD: Human Parasite

This sophomore album of Powerworld hasn’t been finished without stress. When they were working at ‘Human Parasite’, vocalist Steffen Brunner and drummer Jürgen Lucas announced to leave the band. With all speed they looked for solutions. That’s why Simon Michael – usually the drummer of Subway To Sally – took care of drum recordings in the studio. Now they have found a permanent drummer in Achim Keller from Victory.
For vocal duties they engaged no less a person than Andrew “Mac” McDermott and that guy is well-known from earlier performances in Threshold and Sargant Fury. But… Powerworld is mainly the band of ex-Freedom Call bass player Ilker Ersin. He founded the band when he left Freedom Call late 2005 and he writes all the songs. In 2008 they released a self-titled debut, but they could not go on tour to support it. Well, Powerworld has gone through strenuous days for some time.
Let us hope that the tide is turning for the better now: they have a new label (SPV) and ‘Human Parasite’ happens to be a great album, brimming with powerful rock. The recruiting of Mac as vocalist implicates a move into more traditional rock, only the first two tracks can be labelled as some kind of power metal. Lyrics are dealing with all problems of human kind on this planet. Henceforth: no happy metal at all. Guitarist Barish Kepish adds a wide range of marvellous soloing to the songs while the role of keyboards remains quite in the background. ‘Evil In Me’ is a bit more mysterious and slower. This dramatic style suits the band. With lovely piano intermezzos and calmer chants we have a quite catchy tune in ‘Time Will Change’. Another favourite is the epic-alike ‘East Comes To West’ in which riffs verge towards oriental areas. Also ‘Tame Your Demons’ is a fetching song. It is sung in a tempered manner, but includes some fervent guitar skills. Occluding track ‘King For A Day’ has a kind of Firewind flair and winds off this meritorious, though not exceptional second effort of this German band. Early next year Powerworld will hit the road on a European tour with Axel Rudi Pell.

Dit tweede Powerworld album is niet zonder stress tot stand gekomen. Toen men aan ‘Human Parasite’ werkte, verlieten zanger Steffen Brunner en drummer Jürgen Lucas de band. In allerijl werd naar oplossingen gezocht. Vandaar dat Simon Michael – in het dagelijkse leven de trommelaar bij Subway To Sally – de drums in de studio voor zijn rekening nam. Nu is er in Achim Keller van Victory een echte vervanger gevonden.
Voor de zang vond men niemand minder dan Andrew “Mac” McDermott en die kennen we nog van Threshold en Sargant Fury. Maar… Powerworld is vooral de band van ex-Freedom Call bassist Ilker Ersin. Hij richtte de band op toen hij eind 2005 Freedom Call vaarwel zei en hij schrijft alle nummers. In 2008 was er al een titelloos debuut, maar men kon niet op tournee. Powerworld heeft dus al wat tegenslagen moeten verwerken.
Laat ons hopen dat het tij nu keert: men heeft een nieuw label (SPV) en ‘Human Parasite’ is een goed album, gevuld met krachtige rock. De komst van Mac als zanger doet de muziek meer in de richting van traditionele rock gaan, men kan enkel in de twee eerste songs nog spreken van power metal. De teksten handelen over alle problemen die de mensheid veroorzaakt op deze planeet, ook geen happy metal aldus. Gitarist Barish Kepic voegt aan vele songs knappe solo’s toe en de rol van toetsen blijft meestal op de achtergrond. ‘Evil In Me’ is wat geheimzinniger en trager. Deze dramatische stijl gaat hen goed af. Met kabbelende piano en kalme zang volgt dan het meezingbare ‘Time Will Change’. Een andere favoriet is het epische ‘East Comes To West’ waar men een oosterse draai aan de riffs geeft. Ook ‘Tame Your Demons’ is een knap nummer. Het is getemperd gezongen, maar bevat vuurwerk in het gitaarspel. Afsluiter ‘King For A Day’ heeft een Firewind-achtige flair en eindigt dit verdienstelijke, zij het niet uitzonderlijke tweede album van deze Duitse band. Begin volgend jaar gaat Powerworld op tournee met Axel Rudi Pell.
