In 1998 the Iced Earth album ‘Something Wicked This Way Comes’ was released, including the twenty minutes trilogy that was only a summary of an extended science fiction epos written by Jon Schaffer. He worked on it nearly ten years to fine-tune this. The complete story – and of course the music as well – will be released on two albums and the first one ‘Framing Armageddon (Something Wicked Part 1)’ will hit the shops by now.
The concept can hardly be summarized in a few sentences – and I do not want to spoil the pleasure of going into it step by step by the listeners – but in great lines it comes down on this. The Setians are the oldest culture on earth. They are truly concerned with the mess that human beings are making of it and they eventually decided to intervene, in spite of their peaceful and wise nature. Without going into details, this story of good and bad seems to be one that has been written several times, but I can assure you that Iced Earth has put this subject on music in a marvellous way.
It happens by a melancholic intro with strings, followed by a bunch of pure classical heavy metal with vocalist Tim Owens as shining performer. Soon some esoteric chants with oriental tinge will loom up, representing the invasion. ‘A Charge To Keep’ is on the other hand a kind of mid paced composition building up tension in a masterful manner with Tim coming close to Dio vocals. Choirs and the dry sound of percussion determinate the sound. But this is not all there is to offer, for through the contemplative ‘Reflections’ it goes on with the bellicose ‘Ten Thousand Strong’ passing into more ethnic fragments in ‘Execution’. The true origin of the band is honoured in ‘Order Of The Rose’ passing into totally different atmospheres. ‘The Clouding’ verges into Pink Floyd’s heritage, no doubt about it. Fluttering guitars are very David Gilmour-ish, though vocals of Tim soon direct this in another direction, namely of a typical Iced Earth composition with vigorous outbursts.
This is invigorated in the following tracks, one may call these engrossing, intelligent metal tracks, with some Judas Priest links because of the vocals. ‘The Domino Decree’ lays an emphasis on the progressive elements by its keyboard layers, but the chopping riffs in ‘Framing Armageddon’ leave no doubts about it: this is stuff for the heavy metal fans. In despite of adding lots of choirs to increase the filmic aspect of the story, esoteric chants and ethnic percussion, this album will mainly appeal to fans of proper heavy metal that are not afraid of any adventurous items. That’s why Iced Earth has delivered an outstanding album that will bring inspiration and comfort to so many metal fans all around the globe.

In 1998 verscheen het Iced Earth album ‘Something Wicked This Way Comes’ met daarop een twintig minuten durende trilogie die slechts een overzicht was van een lijvig science fiction verhaal dat Jon Schaffer geschreven had. Bijna tien jaar heeft hij eraan gewerkt om dit terdege uit te werken. Het integrale verhaal – en de muziek natuurlijk – zal verschijnen op twee albums en daarvan ligt ‘Framing Armageddon (Something Wicked Part 1)’ nu in de winkels.
Het concept is amper in enkele zinnen samen te vatten – en ik wil de luisteraar het plezier van een langzame ontdekking niet ontnemen – maar komt in grote lijnen hierop neer. De ‘Setians’ zijn de oudste cultuur van de aarde. Zij zien met lede ogen toe wat een rotzooi de mens er van maakt en moeten uiteindelijk ingrijpen, ondanks hun vredelievend en alwetend karakter. Zonder alle details lijkt dit verhaal van goed en kwaad en determinatie om tot verbetering te komen eentje dat al vele malen vertelt is, maar ik kan je verzekeren dat Iced Earth dit op een weergaloze wijze in muziek omgezet heeft.
Dit gebeurt door een weemoedig intro met strijkers, waarna de band een potje klassieke heavy metal op ons bord gooit met zanger Tim Owens in grote vorm. Weldra komen er echter enige esoterische gezangen met oosterse inslag die de invasie vertegenwoordigen. ‘A Charge To Keep’ is dan weer een mid-tempo compositie waar spanning centraal staat en Tim zelfs in de buurt van Dio gezangen komt. Koren en het droge drumwerk bepalen het geluid. Maar dit is niet alles, want via het beschouwende ‘Reflections’ en het strijdlustige ‘Ten Thousand Strong’ gaan we over naar meer etnische stukjes in ‘Execution’. De echte origine van de band wordt geëerd in ‘Order Of The Rose’ om dan weldra over te gaan in heel andere sferen. ‘The Clouding’ leunt aan bij Pink Floyd’s erfenis, laat dit duidelijk wezen. Het gitaarwerk is zuiver David Gilmour, al stuurt de zang van Tim dit uiteindelijk alsnog in de richting van een typische Iced Earth compositie.
Dit wordt versterkt in de navolgende tracks die we onderhoudende, intelligente metal kunnen noemen, met Judas Priest links door de vocalen. ‘The Domino Decree’ legt wat meer de nadruk op het progressieve element door zijn toetsen, maar de hakkende riffs in ‘Framing Armageddon’ laten er geen twijfel over bestaan: dit is op het lijf geschreven van de modale heavy metal fan. Ondanks de invoeging van heel wat koorzang in bepaalde nummers om het filmische aspect luister bij te zetten, de esoterische gezangen en de etnische percussie blijft dit voornamelijk aangewezen voor fans van heavy metal die niet malen om enige avontuurlijke uitstapjes. Waardoor Iced Earth een veelzijdig album afgeleverd heeft dat inspiratie en soelaas zal geven aan zoveel metalfans in de hele wereld.
